It wasn’t called 토스카지노“Kim Ha-Sung Day” for nothing. San Diego Padres outfielder Kim Ha-seong reached the 300-hit milestone in his big league career with a grand slam.
Kim went 2-for-4 with a double, a home run, four RBIs and two runs scored against the Miami Marlins at Petco Park in San Diego on 22 April. Behind Kim, San Diego defeated Miami 6-2.
In the first inning, Kim opened the scoring with a leadoff double. A walk to the next batter put runners on first and second for a double steal, and Manny Machado’s sacrifice fly brought him home. The icing on the cake came in the second inning. After giving up three straight singles to the bottom of the order and facing Ha-Sung Kim with one out, Weathers opted for another fastball on an 0-2 count. The 155-kilometre-per-hour fastball dug into the body, but Kim didn’t miss, pulling it over the left-field fence.
It was his 17th home run of the season and his first grand slam since reaching the big leagues. It was also his 300th hit in the major leagues. The home fans rose to their feet and gave him a standing ovation.
Kim’s performance was even more dramatic because it was “Kim Ha-Sung Day,” a marketing initiative by the San Diego club. In fact, 40,000 bobblehead dolls of Kim were given to fans at Petco Park.
Kim became the third Korean to reach the 300-hit plateau in the big leagues, joining Choo Shin-soo and Choi Ji-Man. He added another cannon two games after the 20th against the Arizona Diamondbacks and is now three home runs away from the 20-homer, 20-double mark for the season.
